We have placed 2nd and 3rd in primary division the past two tournaments. We also placed 3rd in elemenary division. Rachel Apigo won a medal for a perfect score! Look for our awards after the March Championship!

Chess Practice Change

Parents,

We are nearing the chess championship for the 2013-2014 school year. It will be on March 15, 2014 at the same location where tournaments have been held in Lakeland (Highland Park Church of the Nazarene Family Ministries building). After the last match, an awards ceremony will be held across the street in the main church at the approximately 2:45 pm. For the next five practices, we will be focusing on students who qualified to participate in the championship (you had to play at least 12 tournament games). This will enable us to concentrate on strategies that will be beneficial to our students playing in the championship.

The following students qualified (played at least 12 tournament rounds) for the championship and will need to be at the next five practices:

Alyssa Bourgault             Ayla Bourgault            Andre Apigo            Benjamin Nguyen

Cimi Chapman                  Matthew Gaffney         Owen Austin            Richie Corgnell

Sam DeJesus                  Alex Nguyen                Jurnee Alkhatib        Abe Medina

Amanda Motta                 Carlos Gabriel             Connor Melvin          Deddrick Miller

Rachel Apigo                    Reice Herndon             Sanji Nihalani            Seth McMillon

Bhavesh Ananthekrishnan

Championship Practice Schedule:    Wednesdays  2:40pm until 3:45 (except for early release on Feb 5th and FCAT Writes week- Feb 26th)

January 29, February 12, February 19, March 5, March 12

For all other chess club members, I will send out information on our end of the year party and practice sessions after spring break.

Thank you players and parents for help making this a great chess program. J

Chess Tournament

Our first chess tournament is this Saturday! :)  From past parent experience, bring a chair. Last year, my daughter's group had a meeting inside and outside area. Just before each round, we will meet in our area inside (I am finding out our specific location this week). Otherwise, we were right outside the door in the outside area. We packed chairs, tables, and lunch. They do have snack bars and lunch available for purchase there. They also have chess boards, timers, bags, books, and more available for purchase.

Tournament Location (there our usually officers directing traffic in the morning):
Highland Park Church of the Nazarene
Family Ministries Building
4730 Lakeland Highlands Road
Lakeland, FL 33813

Information from Polk Scholastic:
All Players should report to the tournament site no later than 8:00 AM. Any players being signed in after 8:00 AM will automatically be placed in the second round of play.

The information and awards for previous tournaments will start at 8:15 AM.

The first round of each tournament shall start at 9:00 AM. Round two will be 10:30 AM, Lunch till 12:15 PM, Round three will start at 12:15 PM, and round four at 1:45 pm. All round times are an ideal setting with no problems and are subject to change without notice. The tournament should end approximately at 4:00 PM.

Food service will be provided at the Highland Park Church of the Nazarene Center. There will be food specials available at each event. Outside food and beverages may not be brought into the Center. An outside picnic or food consumed in the parking area is permissible.

When pairings are posted we ask that coaches only go to the area and receive them, then take them to another area to give to your players. This will help with the congestion.

During the Awards we ask that all players and coaches sit at the front of the room and preferably with your teams. Parents can sit toward the rear of the building and regroup with your child after the awards. This will allow for a faster distribution and enable us to start on time.

If you have any questions or need any assistance please call your Coach or Arvind Shah at (863) 294-8761.

Welcome

Welcome to Brigham Chess! I am so excited to be sponsoring this club! We are growing quickly. We are now up to 39 members. I'm afraid we have outgrown my classroom and next week's pratice will be in the cafeteria. Pick up will still be on Ave C closest to my room. I ordered some software for chess on the smartboard and we will start learning more about chess from interactive lessons on the smartboard. I also found a great app/website for chess that is very kid friendly and free: http://www.chesskid.com/. Also, if you are needing chess supplies, Wholesale Chess is about the cheapest I have found: http://www.wholesalechess.com/.
A huge thank you to my parent volunteers and my seasoned chess members. Our more knowledgeable chess members were a great help with our beginners!
See you at practice, next Wednesday in the cafeteria afterschool until 4:00 pm.
